Sharma, R.K. and Vinoj Abraham (2004) Labour Productivity in the Indian Unorganised Service Sector:Measurement Issues, Patterns and Determinants,Indian Journal of Labour Economics, Vol 47, No.4, Dec
Abstract: The analysis of patterns and determinants of labour productivity in unorganised service sector based on the NSSO report shows that labour productivity in the rural areas was only nearly half that of the urban areas, establishments had higher productivity than OAEs. Trends also show that informal services sector is highly correlated to the informal manufacturing sector irrespective of their location. But as the size of the manufacturing firm increases the linkages of the informal service sector located in the rural areas would get weakened and the linkages of the urban service sector with the manufacturing sector would get strengthened in both rural and urban regions. OLS cross-sectional estimations suggested that firm size and capital intensity have positive and significant impact on labour productivity. Accelerating labour productivity in informal service sector acquires merit due to a proven negative relation between productivity in this sector and poverty rates and it has a positive and highly significant impact on wage rates in the sector. |
